Questions You May Have About Your Eastern PA Roofing Project

Roofing FAQ Frequently Asked Questions And Glossary Of Terms

Q. Can we install a new roof over the existing roof?

A. Yes, but the preferred method is removal of the old roofing material. Removal allows us to make a thorough inspection of the underlying materials, and the elimination of any wet, rough, and/or unstable existing materials including damaged or rotted plywood or roof rafters.

Q. What kind of material warranties are available?

A. Material warranties are usually issued by the manufacturers for periods of five (5) to forty (40) years.  Master’s Construction offers several types of shingles from GAF that come with a Life Warranty.  Our staff can fill you in on all the warranty choices available to you depending on the particular type of shingle you choose.

Q. Can we put the roof on during the winter?

A. We install roofs all year long, with only minor adjustments due to severe weather conditions.  When necessary we use special cold weather adhesives to ensure that shingles properly bond to underlying surfaces.

Q. What do you do with the old roofing debris?

A. All debris is taken to the landfill and disposed of properly.  Master’s Construction has our own dumpster trailers, allowing us to quickly remove debris from your property.  We don’t leave dumpsters sitting in your driveway for extended periods of time.

Q. What is the “Roofer’s Buggy”?

A. The “Roofer’s Buggy” is a specially designed portable debris hauling container that has a scissor lift mechanism.  It allows the roofing crew of Master’s Construction to quickly remove old roofing material from your home while minimizing the chance of debris falling onto landscaping and other things below.

Q. What type of roofing system should I use?

A. At Master’s Construction, we inspect your home to determine the best methods, materials, warranties, and prices for your individual residential or commercial building.  We then present you with the best options for your particular situation.   And of you are interested, we offer a number of very attractive financing options.

Q. Do you keep the property clean?

A. Cleanliness is very important. Yes, we clean our work area and the surrounding yard area at the conclusion of every workday.  And we welcome feedback from our customers about this issue and any other issues relating to the roofing project that you hire us to do.

Q. Do you charge for estimates?

A. No, we provide written estimates free of charge.   You are under no obligation to hire us, but we believe that you will see the value in hiring expert roofers and home improvement contractors like Master’s Construction who seek to surpass your expectations.

Q. Do light colored shingles last longer than darker shingles?

A. Dark shingles should last as long as lighter shingles given that they are installed on a house that has a properly vented attic. Proper attic ventilation is the key component to a longer lasting roof.  Master’s Construction can determine for you if your attic ventilation is adequate and how to fix it if it is not.

Q. What is a ridge?

A. The ridge is the top of your roof, which runs level to the ground (does not have slope). The ridge is usually covered with ridge caps (short shingles laid in a straight line) or, preferably, with a ridge vent.

Q. What are the differences between shingle types?

A. Basic shingle types are:

3-tab shingle

– cheapest shingle on the market
– Has a single layer minimum coverage
– Good for customers primarily concerned with price

Architectural Shingle (eg. GAF Timberline Shingles)

– Has a double layer minimum coverage
– Higher quality shingle composed of two layers of material per shingle

Designer Shingle (eq. GAF Lifetime Designer Shingles)

– Minimum double layer coverage
– High quality, thick shingle composed of two layers of material per shingle

Q. What is a valley?

A. A valley is created when two main roof decks intersect each other. The resulting junction resembles a valley.

Q. How much will my new roof cost?

A. The cost of your roof will depend on size, shape, slope and the number of existing roof layers that may need to be removed.  It also depends on the warranty choices and type of shingles.  And don’t forget: Master’s Construction offers several easy payment plans and a number of excellent financing options to any customers who may be interested.  Our staff will be glad to fill you in on the details up front, before asking you to sign any contracts.
